The Cost to Produce a Web Video Series

We share a range of costs for Web series such as Dorm Life, Sanctuary and Foreign Body in this weeks edition of the New Media Minute and compare those costs to traditional TV.

The episode also looks at how fast venture capital money is flowing into the online video sector this year. Hint: in the first three months of this year, investment has already reached nearly half of the dollars from last year. Finally, we also offer an inside look at how an online game for Cartoon Network's "Ben 10" is driving Web traffic for the cable network.

    Hi Daisy,
Thanks for the numbers. This provides some perspective and a good counterpoint to the “all you need is a video camera” attitude seemingly prevalent everywhere *except* with creative professionals. Unlike a short film, a video series (web or otherwise) needs to be sustainable for the long term, which means relying primarily on volunteers isn’t practical - something this second generation of web series producers obviously realizes.

What would you estimate the per (New Media) Minute cost to produce and distribute your series is, factoring in your hourly rate, plus those of your technical staff, time for writing, research and marketing and (approving all those facebook requests), and some allowance for video equipment and space, etc?

    Cheers!
