Since microblogging seemed to go over well last week, I thought I’d do some more of it! And my readers also asked for me to share more info on the path to publication so I thought I would elaborate a bit more on page proofs after I mentioned them in my video yesterday.
“First pass page proofs,” as they are called, come after copy edits and before ARCs (advanced reader copies). Page proofs are the pages of your manuscript in a PDF form laid out as they will actually look in the ARC and then in the book, of course. So you get to see the copyright page and the title page and then of course how the actual chapters will appear in the finished book.
My favorite part of page proofs has been the chapter titles. As you know from my earlier post on word lust, I name all my chapters and the way the chapter titles are laid out in page proofs all big and bold and all caps in “The Mockingbirds,” they sort of say to me, “I’m in your face and I’m a kick-ass chapter title.”

Oh my gosh, you must be jumping out of your skin with excitement!
OMG… Love it! And I love chapter titles. Now…. how can I get my hands on one of those ARCs????? : D
It’s amazing to me all the little details that you don’t think about unless you’ve experienced it. This is so very cool and terrifying at the same time! I’m so glad people like you are teaching those of us with zero experience.
Thank you!
OOoh! When do you get ARCs? Can you even imagine what it’s going to be like to hold YOUR book in your hands? Holy. Crap. That is going to be a killer vlog.
Awesome. Thanks for the inside info! Very cool to follow your journey.
I’m sure all your chapters are kick ass!
Brilliant, I love learning all these things and it must be an amazing feeling – congratulations!
I sure hope we get to see a vlog when you get your ARC! And I admire people who can come up with chapter titles–I have a hard enough time titling my book, let alone coming up with a title for each chapter!
